What are the issues that matter to young college students today? The Student Association at Hackney Community College set out to find out in a wide ranging debate with iDebate as part of the Hackney Students’ Conference.

At least 110 students from across the college showed up. The result was a vibrant debate where everyone could take part and give their opinions. The issues ranged from the important current affairs to the personal.

On International Women’s Day we should be celebrating women of the past and considering what next? With iDebate’s public debate ‘Should the airbrushing of women’s bodies in the media be banned?’ we took the latter course with a debate about fashion, the media, and the industries that encourage women, particularly young women, to believe they should strive to be prefect.

March 8th is International Women’s Day and iDebate will be debating 'Should the airbrushing of womens' bodies in the media be banned?’ With the recent revelations of sexual abuse across wide swathes of culture, politics, and of course the media should we be considering how women are portrayed in the media. It can be argued that airbrushing objectifies women by making is seem like they must look like a certain ideal. An ideal that is often dictated by men, part of the power disparity and culture that has led to sexual abuse.

iDebate starts off a new year by having a training session to teach you how to coach debate. The spring term for colleges and schools has started and iDebate’s clubs are beginning to restart after a break for Christmas. With a new term we need new coaches to help run our clubs, and by coming along to this training session you can find out how.

IDEA UK trainer Duncan Crowe will be running a training on how you judge debates in preparation for the London iDebate Cup. Both the training and the competition are taking place in Tech City College.

Does the apathy of young people mean that they in particular need the push of voting being compulsory to push them into participating? It is 50 years on from the milestone Sexual Offences Act of 1967 which partially decriminalised homosexuality in England and Wales (Scotland was to follow later) and we are asking what progress will the next 50 years bring?
