Our debate clubs rely on enthusiastic, amazing volunteers just like you who generously give an hour of their week to train at our clubs. Our volunteers are university students, graduates, and those further on in their careers. We are looking for anyone who wants to make a difference to disadvantaged young people.
Help us to improve the social mobility of young people and develop their leadership skills through our debate education programmes. We work towards the social inclusion of marginalised youth by developing future skills, including critical thinking, critical consumption skills, divergent thinking, analysis, public speaking, active listening and teamwork. We do this by mentoring them to debate human rights issues relevant to their everyday lives in weekly Debate Clubs and regular tournaments.
The IDEA Fellowship
The Fellowship is open to anyone who is capable of public speaking or teaching who can donate an hour or two a week of their time to coach young people to achieve their potential. As a Fellow, you must ensure that you are able to commit to training students regularly, every week, or every couple of weeks as we look for candidates who can provide consistency to a club. We provide lots of support in matching you to a club, in training you, and in helping you develop into the role. And we assign two or more coaches in partnership to ensure the consistent running of a club.
What good would you be doing?
- Providing opportunities to young people from marginalised backgrounds
- Developing the skills that students will need for the 21st century
- Providing a bridge between disadvantaged young people and university/the workplace
- Enabling the voice of young people
The benefits of the IDEA fellowship
- Extensive professional level training on how to debate and how to teach debate
- Developing your skills; leadership, organisation, mentoring and communications
- An opportunity to meet others as motivated as you from a diverse range of backgrounds and careers including corporates such as shell and JLL and government departments.
- All expenses covered (up to £40 per session)
As part of the fellowship, you will need to attend the induction programme and/or workshops conducted once a month (usually in the evening). We provide free-access to IDEA social events, opportunities to represent IDEA to international debating events as an adjudicator. You will be compensated for travel expenses related to the fellowship and we will provide a stipend in return for your time contributing to the programme.

IDEA provided me with tools, resources and basics for my debate competition. It helped me get some good counter points to attack my opposition. Thanks to IDEA resources I was able to get additional arguments and pints and more realistic examples.
